It is believed that the lumber used to build the house may have come from buildings in Balboa Park that were torn down following the Exposition. Hicks had a deep and abiding interest interest in theater; in San Diego, he opened and operated the Plaza, Cabrillo and Balboa Theaters and also staged Buffalo Bill's farewell tour.
